The band took the long ride (two days) up to Sturgis and was warmly welcomed and kindly served by Don and Rhea Overby and team from the Christian Motorcyclists Association. They'd rented a house where several of the artists stayed while most of the team camped out or stayed in r.v.'s all around it. For half of the front yard right off the porch, they'd built a stage with a canopy overhead.
The house is located on Main Street only about a half-block from the center of town and at the beginning of that block there are nothing but bikes filling the center of the street for about three blocks. There is a three foot high wall directly across the street from our stage and rising above it, a grassy hillside where people stopped to sit or lie and rest, listening to the bands and our sharing the Gospel.
Atop the hillside stands the local police station and jail.
GKB did two sets per day as well as backing our dear friend Larry Howard and jamming with another great Georgia bluesman William Seagraves. Myself, Larry and William had great fun making music together and of course, fellowshiping over these days. Our second-last day in Stugis another friend and excellent blues player brought his three-piece band out for two memorable sets- The Reverend Jimmie Bratcher. We hadn't seen Jimmie since a Cornerstone Festival some years back where Larry Howard hosted one of those amazing blues nights. I'm only sorry his set didn't get recorded because hearing him three-piece live was -fine- indeed! Needless to say, sitting in with Jmmie was a treat for me, ditto with Larry and Will which is always a blast.
Ed and Roy cooked (on drums and bass) as usual, and we had fairly good sets right through. I had some excellent chats with some old friends and we were able to share Jesus, His Word and love with a good many people over these days. One way this happened was not only via people sitting across or on our side of the street but also due to the stoplight. Bikers would roll up, check out the music and hear the lyrics and our sharing between song for some mintues... whether they wanted to or not. Each day the police lined up on top of the hill for last-moment instructions prior to moving out over the city. Many of them gave us a thumbs-up as they realized what we were all about.
I must say, Larry and William always make us laugh- these guys love Jesus but are also true Georgia southerners who can turn a phrase and tell a hilarious story or joke in a heartbeat.
Further, I've been writing songs for an upcoming project (ten. called Fulton County Blues) which will be half acoustic and half electric. William so inspired me one night that I ended up writing a song during his set just from listening to his over-all blues/southern rock style.
We saw more motorcycles and more styles, types, old, new and hybrid bikes than ever. We do a lot of bike rallys but this was our first trip to Sturgis so it was quite a trip. I did some drooling over at the Indian Motorcyle tent/display. Whew. No coveting Glenn :)
I bedded down in a room right off the porch with two windows, one on the street. It was almost like inner-city Chicago (Uptown) where we live in that many times per night the police cars would go by with flashing lights on. What was cool is that they mostly did not put their sirens on... good thing or I'd have gotten even less sleep!
The Sturgis Rally is the largest of it's kind in the world, so other bands (and some pretty big "names") play there in various venues and campgrounds around the area. There are everything from families, some pretty straight, to Hells Angels and others hanging out. Naturally, some folks take it as vacation and between the week-long party, a lot of drinking, dope and sex happening you can expect the cops were a tad busy. I let a number of them know we were praying for them.
I'm writing this as we travel by van back to Chicago. On the weekend REZ does it's second and last (in terms of our plans) re-union set up at Unity Fest in Muskegon, Michigan. The next morning I'll be doing some music (worship and blues) and Wendi and I will speak at Crosswinds Fellowship in Muskegon, then she and I head for vacation, the lake, the woods and one-another- yahoo! I'm SO thankful for all who read these blogs and pray.
Oh- I do have a surprise that may interest some of you and will both blog about it as well as deliver some of it to you while on vacation... stay tuned :)
With love and thanks,
-Glenn
