FRESH RESPONSIBILITIES

It has become increasingly clear to me that the joy of the work God gives us to do is in taking seriously the PEOPLE we interact with in that work. As we learn to share His love, joy, peace, kindness, patience (i.e., the fruit of the Holy Spirit within us...) with our family and co-workers we find joy in the labor.

Work for work's sake seems a dead end, a route to despair as many in literature have said more eloquently than I. But when one's work is laced with grace and kindness towards others, there is a deep joy and personal satisfaction that can and is truly SHARED with those we engage with.

Sadly, the focus of many of us (myself included) is at times just... us, not those around us.

I am realizing again that there is not only the command (rejoice in the Lord always, etc.) to walk in His joy, but that sharing His kindness and sharing work with others is a gift, a near-constant blessing that God has not only offered us, but called us to.

Interesting that joy is both gift and responsibility... and also a fruit that grows as we focus on the Lord and others before self. More love? It includes more responsibility in our thoughts, attitudes and interaction with others.

So the question begs to be asked of me- in this day, am I being responsible to love my God and neighbor... or is my focus nearly totally on today's work tasks?

No wonder there are so many unhappy people in the world and church. But thank God there is a way to grow up and out of such mire.

Jesus, help us embrace the key commands to believe and love. Help us to be responsive to Your call. Amen.
